Fortunately the guard and waterkey saddle were already attached, so all I had to do was align the nipple with the existing port and solder it on. Then, the dents are pushed out with a dent tool. Outer slide dents are roughed out by placing the tube over the closest sized mandrel and tapping the displacement. Unfortunately I don’t have photos of either of these. Now that they’re apart, it’s a good time to remove the dents in the tubes and straighten them. With the crook removed and no stress on the slide tubes, they aren’t the same distance apart as the ends of the crook, so the brace needs to be separated and realigned after the crook is installed. It’s come a long way, but it’s not enough and working at it with dent balls didn’t help much, so the crook needs to be replaced. Then, the T-handle is clamped in a vise and the crook is pulled straight away. However, since the brass of Getzens is more compliant than most, Greg suggested I try pulling the dent out.Ī T-handle is soldered to the center of the dent: In nearly all instances, where it’s this severe the crook will have to be replaced. This is a common problem on student trombones – from the slide striking the floor, chairs, other instruments, the heads of those unfortunate enough to be seated in front of the trombone section, etc. The primary issue with mine was the guard on the outer slide crook was pushed in significantly.

Dents in the “gooseneck”, the tube between the handslide and the tuning slide, are removed with a “nose picker” sized specifically to clear the slight arc in the tube. Bell and tuning slide dents were all the same as on trumpet. None of them were significant enough to be reasonably picked up by a camera so there’s no pictures of the bell section work. The bell section had a handful of small dents, some of which appeared to have been partially worked before. I got a (presumably) late-model Getzen 300 without a lot of issues. Upon returning, those of us who went were issued our project trombones, which the rest of the class had already had for a few days. Going to the NAPBIRT convention cost a week of class time.
